Joint Presentation on Emerging Technology “Distributed Acoustic Sensing” for Underground Visualization
November 2022

A research team led by Prof Soga of the University of California Berkeley, GEOMETRICS, a US subsidiary of OYO corporation specialising in geophysical exploration, and Kajima Corporation jointly presented the results of on-going collaborative research, "Quantitative comparison of active and passive surface wave data obtained from distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and three-component geophones", at the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE'22) organized by Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).
We have carried out several field tests in the US and accumulated knowledge about the vibration characteristics of DAS. The presented results show the possibility of estimating the S-wave velocity of the ground by DAS as well as by geophones. We intend to apply this technology to wide-area infrastructure monitoring such as roads and embankments in the near future.

Construction of Virtual “The GEAR” building
April 2022

As announced in August 2020, our first overseas innovation hub “The GEAR project” is progressing. KaTRIS experts from various fields are jointly working to support the project together with the Kajima Group, from site survey, design and construction to planning of future operations.
We are now making a common digital platform where our various experts can jointly, easily work together with less ‘digital frustration’. The digital platform we have built allows us to visualise not only the design BIM models but also underground geological data, 3D point cloud data repeatedly updated during construction and built environmental simulation data for post-construction scenarios.
We continue to upgrade our platform to be the most suitable for such integrated data operation in planning, design, construction and building operation stages, and to contribute to providing customer co-creation platform for future projects.

Participated in HPC-Based COVID-19 Research Project and Contributed to Award of the Gordon Bell Special Prize
November 2021

Kajima contributed to the worldwide advanced research project awarded 2021 ACM Gordon Bell Special Prize for HPC-Based COVID-19 Research as one of the major members. During the 2010s after the SARS outbreak, Kajima has been developing indoor aerosol simulation technologies to prevent the spread of indoor infection. In 2020, in response to the pandemic of COVID-19, we participated in the project led by RIKEN who were engaging in the research of aerosol infection prevention with Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer. Based on the aerosol simulation with Fugaku, some indoor solutions were proposed, that includes effectiveness of COVID-19 infectious risk reduction by ceiling fans jointly researched with Assistant Professor Adrian Chong of the National University of Singapore (NUS).
The Gordon Bell Special Prize for High-Performance Computing Based COVID-19 Research is being awarded by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to recognize outstanding research achievement towards the understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic through the use of high-performance computing (HPC).

Smart Construction Projects in The GEAR (Kajima Lab for Global Engineering, Architecture & Real Estate)
September 2021

The GEAR is a new Asia-Pacific regional business centre of Kajima Group and will act as an innovation centre to drive technological innovations globally after its completion in 2023. It is currently under construction and at the same time, serves as a testing ground for developing advanced solutions including robotics, digitalisation, and automation of construction processes. In line with the Kajima Smart Future Vision, which was published in 2018, we have been conducting various joint research projects with government agencies, universities, and other business partners. In recent years, the Singapore Government has been putting emphasis on the implementation of the integrated digital delivery (IDD) process, and with the Covid-19 pandemic, the focus on digitalisation has accelerated even more. We are committed in accelerating and expanding IDD, and continuously develop a new cutting-edged digitalisation technologies to benefit the future of construction industry.

Being Awarded the Rocha Medal 2021 by ISRM
June 2021

Dr. Yasuhiro Yokota is being awarded the Rocha Medal by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM) for his doctoral thesis titled “Experimental and computational study on rock bolt modelling and its application on a new type of energy-absorbing rock bolt”. He was assigned to Nanyang Technological University (NTU) under the company-sponsored study program, and now he works in KaTRIS after the graduation. His achievement is expected to be applied to underground structures such as tunnels and rock caverns in the future.
With a history of almost 40 years, the Rocha Medal has been awarded annually for an outstanding doctoral thesis in rock mechanics and rock engineering. This was the first prestigious award selected for the achievements in Singapore.

Collaborative Case Study for Satellite Solution is Ongoing
December 2020

Collaborative case study for a satellite solution is conducted with Synspective Inc., a Japanese one-stop-solution provider using geospatial data gathered by small synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. Since the SAR satellites can take a wide range of geospatial data at once, the solution can be powerful in cases such as construction progress management and grasping damage caused by natural disasters. The solution has been improved through the jointly conducted case study with feedbacks from users, and our use cases were reported in a webinar hosted by Synspective and GeoWorks on 27th November 2020. In near future the small satellites will fly over the sky more frequently and such a solution will change the work process of construction industry.
